With the divisional round set to begin this weekend, all eyes will be on the Denver Broncos as they take on their AFC West rival San Diego Chargers in the last game of the weekend. According to early lines, the Broncos are 10-point favorites, more than any team this weekend.
However, that is just on paper, and there are times in which the early line means nothing. In the two meetings this season, the final scores were 28-20 in favor of the Broncos and then 27-20 in the rematch favoring the Chargers. Both teams have played each other close, but there is no denying that the Chargers are a hot team right now. Looking back at last year, the Broncos were one-and-done to the Baltimore Ravens, who were also a hot team going into the matchup.
I’m not saying that this assumes that the Broncos will lose Sunday’s game, but it begs the question: what would happen if the they end up being eliminated in the divisional round like last season? Would there be any repercussions or firings?
I do not see any repercussions happening as far as the firings go. John Fox is a solid coach and has led his team to the divisional round the last three years, and I think his job will be safe no matter what. Of course, this will be guaranteed if the Broncos come out with a win.
Jack Del Rio could be questioned if the result does not go the Broncos’ way because of how the defense has played this season. The only thing that has been wrong with the Broncos’ defense this year has been the pass defense and their ability to get off the field at times.
One thing that they could do if the season ends prematurely is to find better corners and safeties in free agency and the draft. While Champ Bailey is getting better covering the slot, age is definitely catching up to him and they need to find a young talent at the corner position. Fix any holes that the team, has and they should be okay. The holes I see are in the secondary and perhaps the offensive line.
I do not believe there will be any repercussions with a loss, but it will seal another disappointing season for the Broncos. They should win this game. Most people are calling them a team of destiny, but anything can happen. I am sure fans of the team will be disappointed if they fall.
