Jay Gruden Would Be Foolish To Accept HC Job With Washington Redskins

Jay Gruden

It looks as though Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden is making the transition from one underachieving NFL team to another. According to Pro Football Talk, the Washington Redskins and Gruden have reportedly agreed to terms in principle, but are currently hammering out contract details. A similar report was made a few weeks about Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans — the signing became public within 48 hours of the first report.

So if the most recent news is true, that means the NFL will have a Gruden as a head coach for the first time since 2008, when Jay’s older brother John Gruden was roaming the sidelines for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While I have some confidence in John’s younger brother, I’m perplexed as to why the Bengals’ offensive coordinator would jump at the Redskins’ coaching vacancy.

Washington is an absolute mess right now as Robert Griffin III and Daniel Snyder continue to act like love-struck elementary kids, while the Skins’ defense is one of the worst groups in the NFL. Defense isn’t Gruden’s specialty, but he’d better start freshening up on that side of the ball because the divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles don’t show any signs of stopping under Chip Kelly.

Even though Gruden is likely giddy over the opportunity to leave quarterback Andy Dalton in the dust; this offensive coordinator would be making a big mistake by starting his head coaching career by taking over the dumpster fire that is the Redskins.
