While Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman isn’t an under-the-radar player or a behind the scenes guy in any sense of the word, he is still underrated. Arguably the most underrated player in the entire NFL! Almost every NFL fan knows who Sherman is and has most likely heard him talk and seen him play. He is a pretty popular guy and finds himself in the center of attention for a number of reasons.

His mouth alone gets him in the news. Sherman is a notorious trash talker and has even been voted the biggest trash talker in the NFL according to the players who face him. It helps when you can back up all the talk. Sherman does just that. He is arguably one of the best corners in the league and plays every play with 110 percent effort. He’s the type of guy you want on the field as long as he’s on your side of the ball. You don’t want to face a guy like Sherman because he alone can win games.

Sherman lead the NFL in interceptions this season. That’s impressive for any superstar corner because quarterbacks typically avoid big-time players like Sherman. So when a guy like Sherman still leads the league in picks despite quarterbacks avoiding him, it’s saying something. He has certainly earned the title of shutdown defender and is absolutely a player you game plan around every time you face the Seahawks.

Despite all this talent, Sherman brings something else to the table. He’s the heart and soul of the defense and a leader on the team. He leads by example and fires up the team before and during games. Sherman can be seen every home game pumping up the crowd and making the Seattle faithful go crazy. He is beloved in Seattle and is one of the main reasons it gets so loud in Seattle. Sherman drives the volume way up. The former Stanford grad is a very intelligent young man with tremendous talent and carries himself with a swagger similar to the great Deion Sanders. How’s that for a compliment, Sherman!

Sherman does get a lot of credit for his play and leadership. Nobody is arguing that. But he is still underrated compared to how well he plays and how much he means to his team. Without him, Seattle lacks a vocal leader and an outstanding player. Their defense wouldn’t be the same without Sherman and, most likely because he is disliked by many fans around the league, he doesn’t get the credit he should. Sherman is a Pro Bowler and should be named Defensive Player of the Year for his outstanding season and for how much he means to his team. Always matching up with the other team’s best player and usually shutting him down goes unnoticed a lot of the time. But Richard Sherman is one of the best players in the entire league and deserves the credit for it.

The NFL is an offensive league, but sometimes you need to honor the superstars on defense and Sherman is at the top of the list. It’s time to give him the credit he deserves and also admit he is the most underrated player in the NFL.
