It will be tough to keep him around and happy, because he wants to return to a starting role in the NFL, but Michael Vick is a necessity for the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster in 2014.

At this point looking around the league, there is not much available in free agency in terms of quarterbacks the Eagles could utilize to count on if an injury occurred. Vick is the best option moving forward to be able to keep Philadelphia in the hunt if something were to happen to Nick Foles. Matt Barkley is clearly not ready to take over the starting quarterback role if an injury came into play, which is why Vick is an absolute necessity for the Eagles this offseason.

His skillset makes him a hot commodity in a league that is quickly moving to a more mobile type quarterback. However, the consistent concern over his ability to stay healthy should keep some of the competition away and make it an option for the Eagles to keep him around.

Chances are they’ll have to pay him a bit more than the average backup quarterback in the NFL, but the money will be well spent as an insurance policy. In addition, Vick has become a leader in the Eagles’ locker room, regardless of the fact that he is no longer the starting quarterback. He has the respect of the other players and has been supportive of Foles, as his success really helped to create a sense of team which Philadelphia thrived on.

Being proactive and signing him early to an extension would be in the best interest of the Eagles because Vick can still be an asset to the success which lies ahead for Philadelphia.
