The buzz around the Minnesota Vikings isn’t exactly what fans hoped it would be at this time in 2014. After winning 10 games in 2012 and making it to the playoffs, hopes were very high for the Vikings in 2013. What unfolded was an extremely disappointing five-win season. Now instead of talking about a playoff run, fans are talking about who the next head coach will be. The odds-on favorite for the job at this point? Mike Zimmer.
Zimmer is currently the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. However, after going through a second interview with the Vikings on Tuesday, many are speculating that it’s only a matter of time before he’s introduced as the new head coach.
At this point in the hiring process, I don’t know who else the Vikings would even hire? All of the top candidates are already off the market and the Browns are the only other remaining team without a head coach. If Minnesota isn’t sold on Zimmer, fans should worry.
The hope has to be that Zimmer will turn the Vikings’ defense into one of the top units in the league like he did in Cincinnati. At the same time, you have to wonder if the Vikings will branch out and find a new offensive coordinator as well. Both sides of the ball struggled in Minnesota last season, so there’s plenty of changes to be made.
The safe bet is that the Vikings will hire Zimmer before the week is out. If they don’t, fans will start to wonder why Leslie Frazier was fired in the first place.
