Top 20 Miami Dolphins of 2013: No. 14 Koa Misi
The search for the Miami Dolphins‘ next GM and offensive coordinator is heating up. As we wait to see which candidates are hired, let’s continue our look back on the season that was by ranking the team’s top 20 players of 2013. Today, we’ll look at player No. 14, outside linebacker Koa Misi.
Passes defensed: 3
Pro Football Focus breakdown
Position rank: 14 of 35
Run defense rank: 9 of 35
Coverage rank: 23 of 35
Pass rush rank: 30 of 35
Snaps played: 480
Missed tackles: 5
Why he’s No. 14
The Dolphins’ defense stumbled to a 24th overall ranking against the run in 2013 in large part due to a leaky linebacker corps. Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe were shredded by opposing offensive lines and tailbacks. Outside linebacker Koa Misi, however, wasn’t the problem — far from it, actually. According to Pro Football Focus, only eight 4-3 outside linebackers in the entire league graded better defending the run than Misi. Without him, there’s no telling how much worse Miami’s run defense would have been. Also, conversely to Ellerbe and Wheeler combining to miss 32 tackles, Misi missed a mere five. Only 12 other 4-3 outside linebackers missed five or less tackles in 2013.
Why he’s not higher
Misi played less than 50 percent of the Dolphins’ defensive snaps and graded negatively rushing the passer and dropping back into coverage according to Pro Football Focus. He’s a one-dimensional linebacker if there ever was one. Former GM Jeff Ireland‘s decision to ink Misi to a four-year, $17 million extension back in September was beyond curious seeing as so much money has already been invested in the position. The former second-round pick is far from irreplaceable and shouldn’t be one of the highest paid two-down linebackers in football.
