Judgement On Former NFL All-Pro Darren Sharper Should Be Reserved for Time Being
Retired NFL safety Darren Sharper spent a lot of time in the spotlight over his career, mostly for his dominant play on the field. Sharper amassed over 900 tackles and pulled down 63 interceptions over his 14-year career. He was also a prominent piece in the New Orleans Saints‘ Super Bowl run in 2009. His numbers are definitely Hall of Fame worthy, but there is one number that may hurt his chances of making it to Canton — two.
Two is the number of felony sexual assault charges brought against Sharper on Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department. One incident supposedly occurred some time in October of 2013, followed by another incident earlier this month. Sharper was charged, arrested and later released on $200,000 bail. A court date is set for Feb. 14, 2014.
A third assault complaint followed, stemming from an incident involving Sharper and another female in New Orleans. Remi Braden, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department, had this to say about the allegations against the former Saints safety:
“As with every case alleging sexual assault, information gathered is extremely sensitive and the top priority of the detectives is to protect the person who filed the complaint. Because this is an on-going criminal investigation, we cannot provide additional information at this time.”
Sharper has been working as an analyst for the NFL Network since retiring from the NFL. He was immediately suspended without pay after the news broke about the charges brought against him. His fans, friends and family are all shocked to hear of these allegations, but all judgment will have to be put on hold until more information comes out.
