Miami Dolphins’ GM Search Providing More Questions Than Answers
In a saga that previously seemed like smoke coming from a media-fueled fire, the Miami Dolphins‘ general manager search has taken a seemingly troubling turn. Candidate Ray Farmer of the Cleveland Browns has reportedly turned down the team for a second interview and has decided to stay with Cleveland. With all the dysfunction in that organization, should fans worry that Farmer picked the Browns over Miami?
Farmer was reportedly not comfortable with the “unclear” power structure and was either afraid or threatened by the power that Dawn Aponte held within Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross‘ circle of trust.
It has also been reported that Ross had repeatedly said the wrong name when talking to a candidate during an interview. It is unclear who the candidate was, but if it was Farmer then you can’t hate the guy for not wanting to work with someone who can’t even get his name right. “We might be able to build something great here Roy!”
This came just days after Jason Licht decided to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM instead coming back for the finalists’ round of interviews in Miami. Whether he was choosing the bird in hand instead of the bird in the bush or if he saw instability in the Dolphins organization is unclear.
Essentially, the Dolphins have gone from GM search to searching for a GM. The team plans to bring in Tennessee Titans VP of player personnel Lake Dawson along with in-house candidate Brian Gaine for a third interview.
The Dolphins are also set to interview Nick Caserio who is currently the director of pro personnel for the New England Patriots as reported by Adam Schefter. With the success that the Patriots have had and sustained over the past decade, nabbing a guy from that front office could be a great move. If the Dolphins could land him it would mask the recent slip ups. Landing an interview with this man may show that this GM job isn’t as unattractive as perceived to be. In reality, it is one of only 32 NFL general manager jobs in the world.
Stephen Ross has not been making the gig seem very attractive lately. Two candidates from a previously wide field have spurned the Dolphins. It’s enough to worry a fanbase. With that said, have faith. The Dolphins are a good offensive line away from the playoffs. If the new GM, whoever it may be, can manage to fix that he’ll make the fanbase happy.
