New England Patriots’ Devin McCourty A Prime Candidate For New Contract
Devin McCourty has been an interesting player in his first four seasons with the New England Patriots. He has gone from a guy who looked to have a bright future at cornerback to one who now looks to have a bright future at safety. One way or the other, it is time for McCourty to get a new contract.
McCourty’s move from cornerback to safety has been nothing short of a success. He has become the best safety on the team and is capable of playing either strong safety or free safety. That means that McCourty has the athleticism to both roam center field and cover slot receivers and tight ends.
Not many quarterbacks can go deep on the Patriots because of McCourty. Sure, he has been to blame for some deep passes (like a couple against Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning in the postseason), but has shut them down more often than not. And that was a problem for the Patriots defense not too long ago.
McCourty also possesses something that every good safety must have: tackling skills. Despite being only about 5-foot-10, 193-pounds, McCourty usually comes up with the tackle if the pass catcher comes his way. That is another key to ensuring that nobody busts off a big play.
And let us not forget about McCourty’s versatility. He was once a cornerback, after all. The Patriots only had four true cornerbacks on the roster during the postseason which makes one think that McCourty would have been fifth on the depth chart and would have moved to corner had multiple players on the gotten injured.
So Nick Caserio has a player who is about to enter his prime and can play multiple positions. Plus this player will count around $5.1 million against the cap for next season. It is obvious that McCourty should get a new contract to not only lower his cap number but give him the money he deserves.
