Jacksonville Jaguars: Shad Khan Confirms Team is Drafting QB; Which Round?
The Jacksonville Jaguars need a franchise quarterback. Even a blind man can see that. So obviously, many have speculated that the team will draft a QB with the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Now after comments from team owner Shad Khan, there’s absolutely no doubt that the Jags will take a QB.
“Everybody knows we’re going to draft a quarterback – maybe two,” Khan told the Florida Times-Union.
The only question remaining – will the Jaguars indeed use the third pick on a QB?
At this point in time, the answer to that question is likely yes. It’s not that you can’t get a franchise QB later in the draft, it’s that the odds of acquiring one in the top five, are much better. So of all the QBs on the board, who should they go after? The most popular name is no doubt Johnny Manziel.
I believe the Jaguars should take Johnny Football for a variety of reasons. Mainly, because he’s got the skills to be a successful QB and at the same time, he’s got the star power to put some much need attention on Jacksonville. In theory, it could be a win-win situation.
Obviously there are lots of unknowns with Manziel, but if Teddy Bridgewater is off the board, he’s worth the risk for the Jags. Could he possibly be worse than Blaine Gabbert? No way.
The wrinkle in all of this is the second pick, which is currently held by the St. Louis Rams. I use the world currently, because the Rams are most likely going to trade down. If another team wants John Football, they’ll likely need to move ahead of the Jags to get him. Maybe the Jags will be that team that trades up? Regardless, they need to select a QB. The franchise isn’t going anywhere without a star under center.
