With all the focus going to the coaching staff over the last couple weeks — and for good reason — it’s about time to really focus on the roster. Also with the new coaching staff in place, they can weigh in on what players will fit best into their new schemes and concepts. As for Joique Bell, the thunder to Reggie Bush’s lighting, he will fit into anybody’s offense, so it’s time for the Detroit Lions to get him a long-term deal.
Bell has been one of the most consistent players on the entire offense for the Lions, showing he can carry an entire game if Bush gets hurt. He can power up the middle, bounce outside, run over defenders and catch the ball very well out of the backfield. He runs hard on every play and can stick the occasional defensive end with a decent block in what will likely be a pass-heavy offense under Jim Caldwell.
Another great thing about Bell is that he will likely not expect a huge amount of money. He’s a local Michigan guy who came from Benton Harbor High School, was a dominant division II player at Wayne State University and then he ended up playing for his home state’s pro team. He was an undrafted free agent, and he knows that Bush will still be the focus. I’m willing to bet he’ll be a steal compared to what he’ll be able to give to the Lions this season and in future seasons.
It’s time to lock up one of the best running back duos in the league to match up with the Lions’ ever-promising passing attack.
