With the 2013 season now fully in the rearview mirror, focus in the football world is about to shift to the 2014 NFL Draft. The team that sits atop the draft board this year is of course the Houston Texans. With a new head coach in place and roster still pretty full of talent, a lot is riding on who the team selects with the No. 1 pick. If the Texans get the pick right, they could easily be back in playoff contention in a season or two.
So who are the Texans leaning towards taking?
Obviously they have a need at QB. Matt Schaub is about to get cut and Case Keenum didn’t win the job with his play in the second half of 2013. This is leading many to believe that the Texans will select Johnny Manziel with the first pick. Well, according to the latest report from football personality Russ Lande, it’s down to Manziel and Blake Bortles.
This report states that team owner Bob McNair wants to select Manziel, while Bill O’Brien wants to trade down and select Bortles. In addition to O’Brien wanting Bortles, he’s said to not want Johnny Football because he’s not sold on his work ethic.
So there you have it, some of the first real good gossip of 2014. O’Brien doesn’t want Manziel, but the team owner does.
It’s clearly way too early to any real stock into these reports and everything you hear must be taken with grain of salt. We’re still three months away from the actual draft and nothing is set in stone at this point.
