The Buffalo Bills finished another season with more losses than victories. While the team has several talented young players, the Bills will need to add veteran leadership on offense and defense to become more competitive.

The offense had a very hard time passing the ball in 2013, and E.J. Manuel only playing in 10 games was the main cause of the lack of offense. While it was expected that the rookie would make mistakes in his first year, Manuel was unable to finish a complete season and learn from his errors. Thad Lewis tried his best to help lead the Bills against the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots, but the offense was simply not good enough to win. Jeff Tuel was also in the mix at quarterback this year, so the offense had a very hard time finding a rhythm.

Fred Jackson was a nice surprise for the running game in Buffalo this past season. He was a factor in the rushing and passing attack, and Jackson finished the 2013 season with 896 rushing yards and 387 receiving yards. He also scored a total of 10 touchdowns. C.J. Spiller constantly battled injuries all season long, but he was still able to rush for 927 yards and had 185 receiving yards.

The Buffalo defense was great against the pass, but it struggled heavily against the run. Since the Bills ranked 28th against the run, finding free agents on defense that can plug up the middle and make big plays will be a huge priority. The Bills should invest in drafting more defensive playmakers, but it is important to find players in free agency as well

The Bills are a team in search of an identity, and it may take a few years for the organization to make it to the playoffs. While the younger players are still developing, the Bills need to sign several free agents in the offseason.

Here are five underrated free agents that the Bills should target this offseason.

Jonathan Vilma has struggled to stay healthy the past two seasons, but he could be a major steal for the Bills. From 2008 to 2010, Vilma accumulated 246 total tackles, seven sacks and five interceptions.

4. Daryl Smith

Daryl Smith would be another defensive playmaker that could help solve some of the defensive woes in Buffalo. Smith had a very strong season for the Baltimore Ravens, and his five sacks, three interceptions and 123 total tackles would help make him an instant star in Buffalo.

3. LeGarrette Blount

Fred Jackson was a nice surprise in the 2013 season, but Jackson is not getting any younger. LeGarrette Blount would be able to take some of the punishment and pressure off of Spiller, which may allow him to be more involved in the passing game and stay healthier.

2. Kenny Britt

E.J. Manuel could use a physical wide receiver like Kenny Britt to help move the ball. With a big target like Britt, Manuel could greatly increase his touchdown passing total in 2014.

1. Brent Grimes

Brent Grimes may be a stretch for the Bills to obtain, but the Bills would be able to stop offenses from scoring all over them. If Grimes could reproduce his four interceptions in 2013 for the Bills, the games would be much closer in Buffalo.
