The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had one of the worst seasons in the NFL in 2013, but things should improve under new coach Lovie Smith.

Most of the issues in Tampa Bay were due to the friction between coach Greg Schiano and the quarterback Josh Freeman. The team quickly divided by either supporting Schiano or supporting Freeman, and the season became completely lost. Tampa Bay has a lot of work ahead of them in 2014, but the fans are hopeful that Smith can turn things around.

The offense was one of the worst in the league, and the passing game and running game will need to find playmakers through the 2014 NFL Draft and free agency. Rookie Mike Glennon had an admirable season with 19 passing touchdowns and 2,608 passing yards, but the Buccaneers ended up ranking 32nd in passing yards. Smith does not seem like he is committed to Glennon, and a new quarterback will most likely be signed to give Glennon competition.

Doug Martin ran for 1,454 yards and rushed for 11 touchdowns in 2012, but he was unable to stay healthy for Tampa Bay in 2013. With Martin out for the season, rookie running back Michael James took command of the offense. When it appeared that James would be able to fill in as the new lead running back, he broke his ankle and ended his season. A mix of Bobby Rainey and Brian Leonard became the new rushing attack, but Tampa Bay finished the year ranking 22nd in rushing yards.

Vincent Jackson had a great year with Glennon, but the rest of the receiving corps was unable to become the playmakers that Tampa Bay needed. Mike Williams only played in six games in 2013, and Smith may want to part ways with Williams and his off the field issues.

The defense needs to help keep games closer to give the young quarterback a chance to win. Tampa Bay ranked 17th against the pass and 15th against the rush, so finding talented free agents to add to the defense will be vital for the success of the Bucs in 2014.

Here are five underrated free agents the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should target this offseason.

Tampa Bay could part ways with Mike Williams, and the speedster Jeremy Maclin would be a great addition. Defenses would find it difficult to cover the duo of Vincent Jackson and Maclin.

Jared Veldheer would help to create holes for the rushing game and provide time for his quarterback to make the right decisions. He would be an instant star in Tampa.

Between the 2010 to 2011 season, Hakeem Nicks totaled 2,244 receiving yards and caught 18 touchdown passes. Nicks has had a difficult time staying healthy, but defenses would be torn apart trying to cover Vincent Jackson and Nicks.

2. Captain Munnerlyn

Captain Munnerlyn would be the best way to instantly improve the Tampa Bay defense. In 2013, Munnerlyn had three sacks, 73 total tackles, two interceptions and returned both of those interceptions for touchdowns. Tampa Bay should be aggressive in signing this playmaker.

Mike Glennon would benefit from veteran leadership, and Josh McCown would be a great player to help the young Glennon learn and grow. McCown passed for 13 touchdowns and only threw one interception in 2013.
