After enjoying a breakout 2013 campaign with the Denver Broncos, defensive tackle Terrance Knighton – better known as “Pot Roast” – is ready to get paid for his elevated pay.

Knighton signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Broncos last offseason, but after putting together one of the best performances by a defensive tackle in 2013, he believes it’s time for a bump in pay. According to Mile High Sports, Knighton feels he’s outperformed his current contract and is looking for a more-lucrative deal moving forward.

Knighton is coming off a season during which he finished with a 24.1 rating on the Pro Football Focus scale, ranking as the No. 9 defensive tackle in the NFL. Not only did he rack up 31 tackles, four sacks and 25 hurries during the regular season, but was a menacing force during the Broncos’ run to the Super Bowl.

After being reunited with defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who was his head coach during their time together with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Knighton flipped the switch. All year long, he was a disruptive force who wreaked havoc on opposing backfields. And at 27-years old, he still has plenty of time left to be a dominant player. All in all, he’s the type of talent that deserves a shiny new deal.

The Broncos head into the offseason with significant cap space to work with – about $21 million – but also have 17 pending free agents. Even if Denver only chooses to re-sign a couple, that won’t leave much room to work with once free agency starts. Knighton demanding an extension won’t help, either.

If the Broncos choose not to give Knighton a raise, they could risk the veteran holding out in hopes of making some noise.

It’s a tricky situation for the Broncos, who want to reward their star players without putting themselves in a hole. If Knighton is serious about wanting a new deal, though, upping his pay might be the only option.
