Dallas Cowboys Fans Must Watch DL Timmy Jernigan at the 2014 NFL Combine
The NFL Combine is next week in Indianapolis, and coaches, scouts and GMs will be watching and interviewing potential NFL players in order to get ready for the draft in May. For the players, it can be an emotionally nerve-racking time. They have the sense that everything they have worked for their entire lives comes down to this time. For the coaches, scouts and GMs, it is just as nerve-racking. Their jobs can depend on how well they evaluate the talent.
The Dallas Cowboys must attempt to put past failures behind them. They must try to focus on the here and now and have the draft class that can start Dallas back on the upward path to NFL credibility. I have been identifying a player at several positions that I believe would be a great fit with Dallas so fans can keep an eye out for them at the Combine. Here we are going to focus on a position of great need for the Cowboys, defensive lineman.
Dallas’ defensive line has been extremely subpar the past couple of seasons. You can blame it on injuries, but it goes much deeper than that. The real problem is lack of depth. Injuries happen in football, but teams that draft depth overcome those injuries. I believe Dallas must use multiple picks to upgrade the defensive line, but there is one defensive lineman I think Dallas and their fans should be watching more closely than the rest.
The DL I think makes the most sense for Dallas is Timmy Jernigan out of Florida State. Jernigan has been a key component of the Seminoles’ defense that ranked No. 1 in the country. He led Florida State with 11 tackles for loss and is great against the run. Jernigan stands 6-foot-2 and weighs in at 298-pounds but is extremely athletic.
With Dallas likely to lose both Anthony Spencer and Jason Hatcher, they are desperate for defensive linemen. I believe Jernigan is one of the best available in the draft. He could step in and be a starter from day one and instantly upgrade the Cowboys’ defense. Jernigan is a highly rated prospect, so Dallas would likely have to use their first-round pick to get him.
Dallas Cowboy fans will be tuning into the Combine in hopes of seeing a player who can change their 2014 fortune. While there will be other defensive lineman who impress at the Combine, the one at the top of the Cowboys’ and their fan’s list should be Timmy Jernigan.
