The Indianapolis Colts are going to be one of the biggest movers and shakers in the NFL free agent market this offseason. With so many players likely to leave and a ton of available cap space, they’re going to be the team walking around with a wad of cash in their pockets when teams are allowed to start signing free agents.

They'll likely let most of their own free agents walk. They may bring back a few for depth, but this is the year that they can clean house a little and re-allocate their cap dollars. They have plenty to spend and will be one of the major players in the market this spring.

The good news for them is this is shaping up to be one of the most talented free agent classes we’ve seen in a while. Typically the market consists of veterans who have little left to offer or younger players who have failed to live up to expectations.

This year, because there are so many teams up against their cap, the market is going to have actual impact players in the prime of their careers. That’s a good thing for a playoff team that is looking for a few extra pieces to take that next step and really contend for a title.

The Colts have one of the best young quarterbacks in the league and a defense that is getting better every year. They’ve made the playoffs twice in a row, and with a few big signings they can find themselves in the truly elite category heading into next season.

These are the 5 big moves the Colts could make in free agency this offseason.

5. Sign Brian Orakpo

The Colts need a pass rusher to line up on the other side of Robert Mathis, and Brian Orakpo could be that guy. Often injured but clearly talented, Orakpo can instantly upgrade the already impressive pass rush in Indy.

5. Sign Jairus Byrd

The Colts always seem to be lacking in the defensive backfield. Last year was no different. They need an upgrade at safety, especially if they don’t re-sign veteran Antoine Bethea. Jairus Byrd has been playing well for years, although in the anonymity that comes with being on the Buffalo Bills.

3. Re-Sign Vontae Davis

Cornerback Vontae Davis started all 16 games for the Colts in 2013 and racked up 46 tackles but only one interception. Cover corners go for big money on the open market, but if the Colts want to have a defense that can complement their offense they will need to pony up the money and keep Davis in town.

2. Sign Hakeem Nicks

All that defense stuff is nice, but we all know the Colts are going to win on the backs of franchise quarterback Andrew Luck and their offense. What Luck needs the most is a big, traditional outside receiver to complement his already impressive slot guys. Hakeem Nicks has been productive when healthy for the New York Giants, and he could be even better with Luck throwing him the ball.

1. Sign Alex Mack

Alex Mack might be the best player on the open market this year. I know that sounds like a crazy statement, but it’s only because he plays center. He’s one of the best interior lineman in the league, and if the Cleveland Browns don’t slap the franchise tag on him the Colts could be the team to give him a big contract.
