5 Free Agents To Target This Offseason

The NFL's free agency period is right around the corner and the Philadelphia Eagles are primed to be one of the busier teams in the league when the calendar flips to March. They have many of their own pending free agents to make decisions on.

They will also undoubtedly at least dip their toe into the free agent pool, as there are upgrades to be had, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles have a real chance to improve themselves.

There are some big names that also happen to be young that are bound to cash in on some big pay days. The question is, does Eagles general manager Howie Roseman want to go down that road again?

The last time the Eagles shopped big in free agency it ended up burning them. Guys like Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Cullen Jenkins didn't end up working out, despite hefty price tags and only a few seasons later the Birds ended up parting with all of them.

Roseman now has the council of a man named Tom Gamble, who is vice president of player personnel. He is key in guiding Roseman in the right direction. Gamble's San Francisco 49ers teams were for the most part home grown and built through the draft, and he is a huge part of their current success.

This is what the Eagles are trying to get back to. I wouldn't expect a splurge in free agency. However, that doesn't mean that they can't plug some holes in free agency without completely breaking the bank.

Let's take a look at five free agents the Philadelphia Eagles should target this offseason.

5. Jarius Byrd

Jarius Byrd is a ball hawking machine at the safety position. He always seems to be around the ball and has a knack for making plays, specifically interceptions. There are questions, however, about his health and potential astronomical contract demands. If he is in the Eagles' price range, he would be a great get and an instant upgrade at the safety position.

4. Greg Hardy

Greg Hardy is turning into one of the league's elite pass rushers and, at only 25, will be a force for many years to come.

The real question is money, as there will be a ton of teams after him. He would be a monster acquisition for the Eagles, but I am not sure they want to splurge on one player, like they have in years past.

3. Brian Orakpo

Brian Orakpo is a premium pass rusher who you can pencil in for double digit sacks almost every season. At only 27, he is also still a young commodity. Depending on his contract demands, Orakpo would be a slam dunk signing for the Eagles.

2. Jeremy Maclin

When healthy, Jeremy Maclin would be a huge boost to the Philadelphia Eagles' receiving corps. While their is a deep pool of receivers in both free agency and the draft, Maclin already knows Chip Kelly's system and is a reliable and steady receiver opposite DeSean Jackson. It would be wise for the Birds to re-sign Maclin.

1. T.J. Ward

Chip Kelly is very familiar with T.J. Ward. The Oregon product has continued to improve each and every year. He is young, at 27, and he may not have the insane price tag a guy like Jarius Byrd does. In many ways, Ward would be the perfect signing for the Eagles, as he would fill a need without the Eagles having to break the bank.
