New York Jets Rumors: Matt Schaub Addition Would Bring Interesting Competition
It appears that the New York Jets are indeed serious about a QB competition. According to multiple reports, New York has interest in Houston Texans signal caller Matt Schaub. 2013 was a down year for him with 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, including a record-high four straight games with a pick-six. Houston is expected to either release or trade him at some point.
Still, Jets 2013 starter Geno Smith has a lot to prove. His 21 interceptions were the second most only to Eli Manning. Reading coverage was an issue for most of the year. Playing this position well requires going through your progressions, meaning that the passer does not look at their target too long. Smith’s struggles were largely attributed to such poor habits.
In his defense, Gang Green’s only available veteran presence was an apparently unhealthy David Garrard. Backup Matt Simms resented the only real “threat” but had less experience than Smith. Their soon to be second- year signal caller does bring desirable physical traits. His bad stretches like that period of three straight losses led general manager John Idzik and company to at least consider alternatives.
Again, last season was not good for Schaub and included ridicule from Houston’s fans. Overall, there have been moments of solid play though. From 2008 through 2012 the lowest passer rating he registered was 90.7. Therefore, we have seen him play very well before. It is possible that ca hange of scenery could be needed. Schaub, along with anyone who starts for this team, needs better surrounding talent.
He would be a good mentor for Smith, but could also take his job. I still like Michael Vick as a possible Jet, but Schaub would help if Vick does not come to the Big Apple. Ideally, this happens via free agency; however, he might be worth a late-round pick. New York should select some rookie in the middle rounds.
