Denver Broncos Would Be Making A Mistake Letting Eric Decker Go
Set to become a free agent soon, Eric Decker has performed well in the Denver Broncos‘ system, especially in the past two years. With the numbers that Decker has, it would be foolish for the Broncos to let him walk.
I understand that the Broncos have a lot of decisions to make during the free agency period, but so does every other team. Not everyone can stay, but losing perhaps one of the most important players on the roster would not be ideal. The fact of the matter is that the Broncos do not have to play him handsomely in order for him to stay, but at least figure out a way to allow them to keep money for the next offseason and that will help Decker as well, because I sure believe that he has earned at least a decent pay raise.
Let’s look into a scenario where he does not return to Denver and gets paid the money to play elsewhere, especially if it is to a team that does not have a legitimate No. 1 guy. I believe that he will be focused on in game day and perhaps his production could drop. Now, I am not saying Decker is a bad player, but if the team he would end up with does not have another wide out to ease some of the coverage, it will not be pretty.
Another point of view is what if Wes Welker ends up getting hurt? Remember that he suffered two concussions just in 2013 alone. He could be one huge hit away from retirement, and that is when the Broncos would need Decker the most — not because he is a safety net for the Broncos, but his production in the offense is solid at best. To say Decker is only a good receiver because Peyton Manning is throwing to him is a joke; Decker had a pretty solid year when Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow were under center back in 2011.
The fact of the matter is that letting Decker go would not be an ideal situation for both parties involved. If the organization wants another run at the Super Bowl, Decker should be one of the pieces.
