5 Free Agent QBs That the Dallas Cowboys Should Steer Clear of If Kyle Orton Retires
On Friday, the team acknowledged that backup quarterback Kyle Orton hinted at retirement and that they weren’t sure if he’d be coming back for the 2014 season.
“No, I don’t know [that he is coming back],” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “But, I haven’t gone and asked him.”
Orton is scheduled to cost the Cowboys $4,377,500 against the salary cap in 2014, and while his retirement would free up some much-needed cap space, it would also create a hole, which the Cowboys would have to fill with a serviceable backup quarterback. Should Orton retire, he would have to pay back some of the prorated signing bonus that he has received.
Then there’s the uncertainty behind 33-year-old starting quarterback Tony Romo, who underwent two back surgeries in 2013. While the Cowboys have maintained that Romo will be good to go for the 2014 season, I remain a bit skeptical.
Let’s face it, as players get older it takes more time for them to recover, and given that Romo isn’t a spring chicken anymore, I have my doubts that the skies over Valley Ranch are bright and blue. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that they’re not bright and blue, just saying that I have my doubts.
So, if Orton does, in fact, retire and the Cowboys decide that they’d rather find a reliable backup quarterback via free agency, these are five quarterbacks that I wouldn’t want to see wearing the star on their helmets.
If the goal is to win now, Tim Tebow shouldn’t be on the Cowboys radar. Besides jersey sales and crazed female Cowboys fans, Tebow doesn’t offer the Cowboys much.
Not much more than a third string quarterback nowadays; Rex Grossman is another player that the Cowboys need to steer clear of.
Now a 34-year-old shell of the player he once was, Michael Vick should be the last player that the Cowboys look to, for veteran help. Not known for being an accurate pocket passer, Vick would bring little to no help to the Cowboys offense should Tony Romo go down; not to mention, he’s an injury risk.
