2014 NFL Draft: Darqueze Dennard Will Be A Shutdown Cornerback
The cornerback is one of the most important positions in all of the NFL. yet, there are perhaps two or three corners that are actually good enough to considered “shutdown corners.” With that said, the 2014 NFL Draft is one of the deepest classes for cornerbacks in recent memory. There are five or six guys that could start for an NFL team, and several more that could end up playing some sort of role in a team’s defense. However, even though this year’s cornerback class is loaded with quality talent, there is one player that stands above the rest at his position.
Darqueze Dennard, out of Michigan State, is the one player in this year’s draft class that could join the ranks of shutdown NFL cornerbacks. It may seem crazy to think; after all, if there are only a few true shutdown guys in the NFL. What makes Dennard good enough to join them? Truth is, Dennard’s play speaks for itself. When you watch him play; several things immediately stick out in Dennard’s game.
Winning the Jim Thorpe award as the nation’s top defensive back, Dennard’s senior season was truly spectacular. He stands at 5-foot-11 and is one of the best ball-hawks in this year’s draft. Dennard collected four interceptions last season, and his vision, coverage ability and size are all immediately noticeable on tape. His speed is perhaps a level below the truly elite, however, make no mistake, Dennard is plenty fast enough to keep up with professional receivers.
When you watch Dennard play, you just can’t help but feel impressed with the man. He has everything a team is going to want in their No. 1 corner, and in a league that is lacking in shutdown corners, Dennard is going to prove he can become one of those select few players.
Remember the name Darqueze Dennard, ladies and gentlemen, for it’s only a matter of time before we’re talking about him as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
