5 Overrated NFL Free Agents the Jacksonville Jaguars Should Avoid At All Costs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of work to do this offseason. One of the most disappointing teams in the league, they have needs all over the field. One thing they do have going for them is available cap space which means they can be active players in the free agent market if they want to be.

But active shouldn’t mean careless. A team like Jacksonville, trying to get some footing and find a solid core they can build around, can’t afford to have bad contracts weighing them down in the future. All too often guys that look like surefire game-changers turn out to be wasted cap dollars down the road.

The free agent market is very deep this year. There are plenty of players who can instantly make the Jaguars better, but there are busts just waiting to happen out there as well. Jacksonville needs to upgrade the pass rush, receiving corps and the running backs, and those are just the most immediate needs.

The Jaguars have a long way to go before they can be real contenders in the AFC. But any long journey begins with the first step, and that first step will be the Jaguars making a few good signings in free agency this offseason. The players are out there, but they have to make sure they stay away from any bad contracts that may be lurking.

Jacksonville wants to get back on track, but they need to make sure they avoid these five overrated free agents this offseason.

We've been waiting for the Darren McFadden breakout year ever since he came into the league. A talented back who is productive when he can stay healthy, he's yet to prove he can put a full year together. One thing you can't afford to do in free agency is give big money to someone who can't stay on the field.

4. Anthony Spencer

Once an up-and-coming pass rusher, defensive end Anthony Spencer is now a 30-year-old lineman coming off a major injury. Someone, most likely a contender this year, is going to take the risk that he can get back to his 11-sack season in 2012. Jacksonville needs to build for the future, not take risks for short-term production.

Another aging pass rusher who has seen his better days, Jared Allen is going to get overpaid by a contender that thinks they can squeeze another year or two of production out of him. Jacksonville has no need for an aging veteran who saps up too much cap space.

Oh, Eric Decker. All too often we see complementary receivers whose quarterbacks make them look better than they are get overpaid on the free agent market. Whoever signs Decker is going to realize real quick he's not a No. 1 receiver, and he doesn't come as a package deal with Peyton Manning.

The Jaguars need more pass rush next year, but they need to stay away from Brian Orakpo. A talented outside pass rusher, Orakpo is likely to get overpaid on the open market. He always seems to have a nagging injury, and he's got a lot of wear and tear on his body already.
