New York Jets Rumors: Adding Josh McCown Makes Perfect Sense
The New York Jets are in the market for a backup quarterback this offseason, preferably of the veteran variety. The Jets need a quarterback who can come in and mentor Geno Smith, but also a player who can compete with him for the starting job if necessary. With that in mind, reports have surfaced that the Jets are interested in signing Josh McCown, who was fantastic this season while filling in for Jay Cutler with the Chicago Bears.
The report from the New York Daily News included a few other updates on the Jets’ quarterback pursuit, stating that the Jets are unlikely to pursue Michael Vick (a wise choice) and that Matt Schaub has no interest in being Smith’s backup, which is not particularly surprising. I still believe that the Jets will give Tavaris Jackson a long look in free agency, but McCown is the best possible option for them.
McCown completed 66.5% of his passes for 1,829 yards, 13 TDs and just 1 interception in parts of 8 games for the Bears this season, and he has become a valuable to commodity to many teams in need of a backup. However, McCown turns 35 this summer, and this season was the first time in his career that he had any significant NFL success. Also, he would not have receivers the caliber of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery in New York, regardless of what the Jets do this offseason in free agency and the draft.
All that being said, McCown still makes a lot of sense for the Jets as a backup. He is not the type of player who is going to demand a starting job, and he has plenty of experience to help mentor Smith. The Jets shouldn’t expect a repeat performance of McCown’s 2013 season if they were to sign him, but he certainly proved that he can still play. Many people have talked about the Jets adding another quarterback through the draft, but signing a veteran in free agency makes much more sense and would be much more beneficial. McCown is the ideal candidate for the Jets, and they would do well to get a deal done with him.
