San Francisco 49ers and Anquan Boldin Close To Agreeing To A New Deal

Early on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported that the San Francisco 49ers and free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin were close to agreeing to a contract that would see Boldin stay with the team for the 2014 season and beyond, depending on the length of the deal. This was corroborated not long afterwards by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, who reported a similar story based on talking with a few of his league sources.
Since the 49ers’ season came to and end in late January, I, along with many others, have written and highlighted the fact that one of the priorities for the 49ers this offseason is the fact that they need to upgrade the wide receiver position and one way of ensuring that is by resigning Boldin. I have even gone as far as to say that the news about the reported increase of the salary cap for the 2014 NFL season to either $130 or $132 million ensured that Boldin would re-sign with the 49ers.
Given the reports from Schefter and Rapoport, you get the feeling that the 49ers and Boldin are very likely to seal a deal within the next week, which would be great news for the 49ers, with the free agency period officially opening on March 11. In addition to re-signing what must be priority 1A and 1B for the 49ers, this will allow the team to be flexible and properly evaluate all free agent wide receivers and draft eligible wide receivers and determine which routes to take in order to add to and strengthen the wide receiver corps ahead of the 2014 season.
It cannot be said enough how important it is that the 49ers keep and re-sign Boldin, despite his 33 years of age. He was a very productive wide receiver and served as a reliable and trusted targeted for Colin Kaepernick, while being the perfect complement to a healthy Michael Crabtree. It goes without saying that closing a deal here real soon is welcomed news and will be a big sigh of relief, as the 49ers can now concentrate on working on trying to re-sign other free agents on the roster.
