The Philadelphia Eagles today came to terms with Jeremy Maclin on a one-year contract. This was a no-brainer for both the ball club and the player. Maclin has been productive every time he’s been on the football field for the club and Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has to be salivating at the thought of an explosive athlete like Maclin in his up-tempo offense.
The Eagles wanted Maclin to agree to a multi-year pact but the receiver instead chose to accept a one-year prove-it deal. Maclin is coming off ACL surgery and the Eagles may have wanted to take advantage of that by trying to get him to sign a low ball two or three-year deal.
Maclin instead chose to sign a one-year pact such that if he produces we will see him cash in next season, whether with the Eagles or someone else. It is a win-win deal for both sides. The Eagles now have a formidable wide receiver threesome with Riley Cooper, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson. Maclin has stated his desire to remain with the Eagles numerous times.
So him having a huge year would prove to the club that he is healthy and also motivates the Eagles to lock Maclin up for the long term. Maclin has a chance to really show the type of receiver he is capable of being.
It is an offense tailor-made for his array of explosive skills. He also will be able to utilize his talents in the slot and on the outside as Kelly moves all of his receivers around all over the place.
For Maclin, the 2014 campaign is a big one for both himself and the club. My money is on the kid shining and being in Eagle green for a long, long time.
