The Kansas City Chiefs are up against the salary cap heading into free agency. The increase in total money that teams can spend gives them some hope that they can make a few value signings, but every other team has access to that extra money too. Kansas City is walking a thin tight rope this offseason, but with a few key moves, they can be right back in the playoffs next season.
Several teams have been rumored to have interest in offensive lineman Jon Asamoah. Unfortunately for Kansas City fans, none of those teams are the Chiefs. The Jets and the Falcons seem to be the leading candidates right now.
Dexter McCluster is one of the most interesting free agents on the market this year. He has been relatively productive in Kansas City as a receiver, and that production could lead another team to overpay him. The Chiefs would like to bring him back, but they won't want to match a big-time offer that could come from some team enthralled with his unique skill set.
The rumor started a few days ago that the Chiefs are one of the teams interested in tight end Jermichael Finley. I’m sure they hope they can get him at a value price. They will definitely be in the running to bring in a playmaker on offense, and that could take the form of a tight end who is a factor in the passing game.
The Chiefs have made good use of a diminutive receiver/running back hybrid the last few years. They might look to replace Dexter McCluster with Darren Sproles if they see him as an upgrade who can step right in and play the same role.
Left tackle Branden Albert has had one foot out the door in Kansas City ever since the Chiefs took another left tackle with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft last year. All of the reports have the Dolphins way ahead in the race to sign the best offensive lineman on the open market this year.
