5 Overrated Free Agents the Cincinnati Bengals Should Avoid

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t have a lot of money to spend in free agency, and what little money they do have, they need to focus on retaining as much of their talented young roster as they can. If they are going to sign any new free agents, they should focus on value signings, not big-name players who will come with equally big-time price tags. Mostly, they need to avoid the temptation to sign any of these five overrated players.

Brandon Spikes wore out his welcome in New England this past season. He is a good run stuffer, but he struggles in the passing game. Someone will overpay him to be their starting middle linebacker, but not the Bengals.

Jared Allen has been one of the most productive pass rushers in the league over the last decade or so. But in free agency, you always want to make sure you're paying for future production, not past production.

Daryl Smith had a bounce-back year for the Baltimore Ravens last season, but whoever pays for the promise that he can keep it up will be sadly mistaken.

The Bengals could use an elite cover corner, but the market for them this year is starting to get overvalued. Alterraun Verner is likely to ride that wave and get overpaid this offseason.

Cincinnati may release running back Benjarvus Green-Ellis, but that would do them on good if they bring in another highly-paid ball carrier. Darren McFadden has plenty of talent, but he can’t stay healthy, and you never want to over pay for someone who spends more time watching the game than playing in it.
