The Tennessee Titans are looking for a few good values this offseason in free agency. A team that has been up and down the last few years, they want to start building a regular winner under new head coach Ken Whisenhunt. They will need to avoid these five overrated free agents at all costs is they want to get off on the right foot.
With the switch to the 3-4, bringing in a guy who had a comeback year on the Baltimore Ravens last season would seem like a good idea. But Smith is 32 years old and has been injury-prone in the past, and that is not the kind of guy you want to spend money on in free agency.
It always makes me wonder when a team has the resources to re-sign one of their own and chooses not to. The Raiders could bring back left tackle Jared Veldheer, but they don’t think he’s worth a big contract or they would have already locked him up. The Titans need a new tackle, but they should look at some less costly options instead.
The free agent market for cornerbacks is likely to be an expensive one this offseason, and the Titans will need to spend somewhere near million per year to keep Alterraun Verner in Tennessee.
The Titans won’t be bringing back Kenny Britt next season, so they might be tempted to try to go out and get a No. 1 receiver in free agency. Instead, they should save their money and give the playing time to a young guy like Justin Hunter.
Chances are the Titans will let Chris Johnson go this offseason unless he agrees to take drastically less money. They might be tempted to find a replacement on the free agent market, and Darren McFadden’s potential can be enticing. But he doesn’t stay healthy, and Tennessee has hopefully learned their lesson about giving too much money to a running back.
