In news that's been expected for quite some time now, Santonio Holmes has been released by the New York Jets. Simply put, Holmes was too old and making too much money for the Jets to keep him on the payroll. Now, he's on the open market and the possibilities for his future are wide open. Here are the top five landing spots for the veteran WR:
Most are expecting the Lions to take a WR early in the draft this year. But if they want to add a proven veteran to the mix as well, Holmes would be a solid choice at the right price.
Could Holmes return 'home' to the Pittsburgh Steelers? You can't rule it out. The Steelers need receivers and you know that Big Ben would welcome a familiar face in the huddle.
After watching the Ravens in 2013, it's clear that they need receiver help. Holmes would be an intriguing player to add to the mix, but only if he's willing to play for way less.
You can never rule the Patriots out when it comes to signing aging and troubled receivers. While Holmes' history of bad behavior isn't quite as extensive as past Pats members, he still fits the bill.
The 49ers did not have a great season through the air in 2013. They could stand to add a few more pass-catchers to the depth chart and if Holmes wants to win, San Francisco would be a good spot.
