Dallas Cowboys Need Jerry Jones To Overcome Fear of Change To Succeed

Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys

As the NFL free agency period gets underway today, most teams are looking to make changes. This is the time of the year where teams release the overpaid, underperforming veteran and sign the younger player to replace them. It is not personal—it is just business. Football is a young man’s game, and in order to be successful you have to embrace change. Most teams realize this, but then you have teams like the Dallas Cowboys who just do not seem to get it.

The Cowboys have decisions to make on players like Jason Hatcher, Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware. Hatcher and Spencer are free agents. Ware is under contract but is on the books for $12 million this year. The decision on Ware will determine just how much the Cowboys have to spend in free agency.

I believe Ware should be released if he refuses to take a pay cut. With that said, I do not believe that Dallas will release him. Reports are that Jerry Jones wants Ware to take a pay cut so that he can also re-sign Hatcher and Spencer. All three of these players are in their 30s.

Why would Jerry want to spend most of Dallas’ limited cap space to bring back three guys off a defense that was the worst in team history? It is because Jerry is terrified of change. That is why he continually gives contracts to players who are past their prime. Jerry is afraid of the unknown and he doesn’t know how to say goodbye.

Today, many teams will make the difficult decisions to release players that have meant a lot to their organizations. They will not want to do it, but they will because it is what is best for the organization. Meanwhile, in Dallas, Jerry Jones will do what he always does — stick with his guys. Jerry will continue to fear change and be loyal to his guys. As for the Cowboys, well, they will just continue to be mediocre.
