Denver Broncos Get Much-Needed Defensive Upgrade With T.J. Ward
According to multiple reports, T.J. Ward is flying to the Mile High City to sign a contract with the Denver Broncos. John Elway‘s tweet really says it best: “Excited to announce we’ve agreed to terms with strong safety T.J. Ward. He’ll bring energy and toughness to our secondary.”
The key word in that statement from Elway is toughness. That’s what the big-hitting safety is all about. He’s made a name for himself by lighting up offensive players over the last four years in Cleveland, and now he’ll finally get a chance to play on the big stage in Denver.
To anyone who watched the Broncos get shellacked in Super Bowl 48, it was clear that they had to get better, and specifically more physical, on defense. Elway then wisely wasted no time in free agency by inking Ward, a guy who’s a proven run-stopper from the strong safety position.
While this is a fantastic start to free agency for Denver, fans are hoping that it’s just that — the start. Elway can’t stop here with the defensive upgrades. He could do the bare minimum with the team’s offense and it wouldn’t make much difference. Scoring points is not the problem in Denver. The Broncos flat out have to be a better defensive team.
Most are expecting that they’ll pursue pass-rush help next in free agency. Two big names to keep an eye on in the upcoming days: Jared Allen and DeMarcus Ware.
