New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team Smart to Gauge Interest in Darren Sproles Around NFL
It was leaked last week that the New Orleans Saints‘ veteran running back Darren Sproles would be released during the free agency period and the team would be looking toward the future at the running back position. It was basically a done deal that Sproles would not be back in New Orleans for his ninth season in the NFL. However, all that has changed today, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter:
Saints still haven’t released RB Darren Sproles and now plan to trade him due to heavy interest, per ESPN source. Not being released, though

It was expected that they would release the veteran, but sources say that the Saints were gauging league interest by rumoring that he would not longer be a member of the team once free agency began.
This had to be the smartest move by the Saints because there have been about 10 teams that have shown interest in the nine-year vet and many teams are willing to give a soon-to-be 31-year-old running back a chance at playing seriously for the next year or two.
Sproles didn’t have the ideal season on the ground in 2013, rushing for just 220 yards and two touchdowns but he did catch 71 passes for 604 yards and two scores.
If there was a time to trade a guy when the talk is hot, it’s now. The Saints made the smart choice of waging interest around the league for a speedy running back who is one of the best receiving backs in the league.
Great move by the Saints who will get some value out of this.
