The Top 10 Players Still Available After Day 1 of 2014 NFL Free Agency

Day 1 of 2014 NFL Free Agency
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The first day of the 2014 NFL free agency is officially over. Several teams sought out their primary targets and agreed to terms with the idea that a single player can make a difference when the 2014 season is in full swing. With numerous players off the board, who are the top 10 players still available?

10. Jermichael Finley TE

Jermichael Finley

Jermichael Finley has never lived up to the hype but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been a productive player throughout his career. The tight end is a major threat on offense, as long as he can stay healthy. It doesn’t appear that the Green Bay Packers will retain him, which means some team could get a potential steal in free agency. Finley will be meeting with the Seattle Seahawks in the next few days.

Age is the only thing standing in Randy Starks’ way, which isn’t a huge obstacle considering he’s only 30 years old. His solid performance in 2013 should allow him to sign for a decent offer as soon as some of the other top defensive linemen ink their deals. Starks has proved to be effective in the run game and has shown the ability to consistently get after the quarterback.

B.J. Raji is still considering the Packers’ one-year, million offer. The truth is he should just suck up and accept the deal because it doesn’t appear teams are interested in overpaying for the defensive lineman. With that being said, if a team is willing to take a chance it could pay huge dividends, especially if they employ a 4-3 defense.

7. Henry Melton DT

Henry Melton’s ACL tear from a season ago is the only reason he wasn’t signed on the first day of free agency. At some point soon, teams are going to smarten up and realize that he’s still the same productive defensive tackle prior to the injury. Not to mention, the man is only 27-years-old with a tremendous amount of upside.

6. Jason Hatcher DT

There are at least seven teams interested in signing defensive tackle Jason Hatcher. However, six of those teams will have to get in line, as he will be visiting the Seahawks within the next couple of days. Seattle just re-signed Michael Bennett on a four-year deal, which means the addition of Hatcher would be detrimental to the opponents of the Super Bowl champs.

5. Lamarr Woodley OLB

Lamarr Woodley

Lamarr Woodley is the best available outside linebacker in free agency this year, which makes him a hot commodity. The 29-year-old posted five sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 11 games last season. Injuries have been a concern over the past three seasons, but there’s no question he’s still a top-notch asset. The Tennessee Titans appear to be the frontrunner to land him as they transition to a 3-4 defense this offseason.

4. Eric Decker WR

Eric Decker

Eric Decker hasn’t received any love from the Denver Broncos, which won’t be a bad thing if a team overpays for him. Peyton Manning’s presence is a big reason why Decker’s numbers skyrocketed the last two seasons. However, that shouldn’t scare teams away from inking a deal. He’s an incredibly gifted receiver that would be an instant upgrade on a majority of teams. The top receiver in free agency should expect a big payday this week.

The New England Patriots want to retain Aqib Talib, but the pursuit of the Washington Redskins could derail that. Washington’s intense interest could be the difference maker as New England rarely pays out big for players in free agency.

2. DeMarcus Ware DE

The Dallas Cowboys releasing DeMarcus Ware was a bit of a surprise. However, it recently was reported that the Cowboys could reach a deal with the defensive end if he decides he doesn’t like any of his other options. The fact that a reported six playoffs teams contacted him on Tuesday doesn’t bode well for Dallas’ chances of bringing him back, which might be better in the long run.

1. Alex Mack C

Center Alex Mack is the only offensive lineman on the list. It was reported that the Cleveland Browns used their transition tag on him. That means he can still sign with another teams, but the Browns have the ability to match any offer within five days. As of right now, the Baltimore Ravens appear eager to sign Mack, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are definitely in play.
