Aqib Talib Signing A High-Risk, High-Reward Move For Denver Broncos
Well folks, John Elway is up to his usual tricks during the free agency period once again.
As the first day of free agency was ending, the Denver Broncos made perhaps one of the biggest moves of the day and signed former New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib to a huge six-year deal worth $57 million. That contract includes $26 million guaranteed.
The move shows that the Broncos are not messing around during this free agency period and are looking to get great talent on the defensive side. The Broncos were able to sign T.J. Ward just hours before the Talib deal was done. They saw how great of a defense the Seattle Seahawks had and are looking to be even more physical on the defensive side.
While the huge contract is great for Talib, I believe that he will come as a high-risk, high-reward player. Even though he was able to revive his career with the Patriots, the first risk involved is his injury status. This is more noted during the two AFC Championship games that he never finished as he was injured, which made a huge impact for the Patriots on the defensive side of the football.
Another cause for concern are his character issues. He has had some problems with the law off the field. While it has not become an issue as of late, it is always something that a team should tread very carefully with.
Despite the two risks to Talib, I believe this move will further help the Broncos become contenders for the Super Bowl once again. Having a cornerback who can truly shut down the opponent’s wide receivers is something the Broncos need. With another huge signing in the Elway era, fans of the NFL are now looking out to see if the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback has another trick up his sleeve.
