As the 2014 NFL free agency period continues to roll on, it’s no secret the New England Patriots are looking for help at the receiver position. After they allowed Julian Edelman to walk, New England left itself vulnerable out wide with the fragile Danny Amendola as its top target along with inconsistent sophomores Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson. With Brandon LaFell set to visit Foxborough, the Patriots may have the perfect answer to their problems fall right into their laps.
LaFell got more and more work and improved steadily as a the second receiver for the Carolina Panthers behind Steve Smith. His first four years in the NFL saw him catch 167 passes for 2,385 yards and 13 touchdowns, including five in 2013. He’s an extremely underrated receiver who runs great routes and is still somewhat raw as a former third-round pick out of LSU. With a coaching staff like the Patriots’ he could become a star.
New England has a knack for turning lower-tier players into big-time contributors, especially on offense, and LaFell fits the bill perfectly. With or without Amendola in the lineup, he would be a great underneath or deep option for Tom Brady because he’s a solid all-around receiver who could develop a specialty under Bill Belichick that would make him lethal. Assuming he doesn’t ask for too much, the Patriots would be crazy to let LaFell leave New England without a deal.
