While the Denver Broncos are loading up, the New England Patriots' championship hopes are diminishing. After losing their top cornerback, Aqib Talib, the Patriots must follow these steps in order to keep their Super Bowl aspirations alive.
The Patriots have roughly million to spend and are in need of more breathing room to accommodate for the loss of Talib. New England needs to cut ties with Tommy Kelly, Adrian Wilson and Isaac Sopoaga, restructure the contracts of Vince Wilfork and Logan Mankins and extend Devin McCourty and Stephen Gostowski. These moves could give the Pats an additional million in cap room.
Tom Brady could use a big, outside target in the passing game. The Pats don't need to overspend, but they certainly need to add more weapons. Brandon LaFell has been on New England's radar and should come extremely cheap. Other options include: James Jones, Hakeem Nicks, Sidney Rice and Emmanuel Sanders.
Many veteran pass rushers have become cap casualties and are currently available on the open market. Players like Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, DeMarcus Ware and Chris Clemons could all be signed for a small amount of money. Despite their ages, these veterans should be able to produce at a high level playing across from Chandler Jones. New England needs to beef up their front seven in order to get after the quarterback consistently.
The Patriots cannot let Tom brady's No. 1 target walk away for the second year in a row. New England needs Edelman and Edelman needs New England.
If there is a player worth giving big bucks to, it is Darrelle Revis. After the departure of Talib, New England absolutely needs to go after Revis. Without a great left-corner, the Patriots' Super Bowl hopes are extremely slim. It is surprisingly feasible to obtain Revis and with the above contract restructures set in place, the Patriots will have enough room to fulfill other needs.
