Philadelphia Eagles Have Interest In Darrelle Revis, But Can They Land Him?
In a somewhat stunning move it is expected for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to cut star cornerback Darrelle Revis. There are a variety of reasons for this. The Bucs recently signed Alterraun Verner, a stud cornerback in his own right for a much more reasonable deal than the monster contract Revis has.
Under new head coach Lovie Smith, the Bucs don’t need a cornerback to be a dominant player. In the Tampa 2 scheme, the cornerbacks’s responsibilities aren’t as high, so having a cornerback on a $16 million contract is crippling to a franchise.
I don’t see a trade with Revis as likely at all. No team is going to take on that salary and give up anything in return. Instead expect the talented Revis to be cut at 4 p.m. ET before the Bucs have to give up further draft compensation to the New Jork Jets.
Speaking of the Jets, they are one of the teams that will be pining for Revis. Keep an eye out for the Philadelphia Eagles and also the New England Patriots. In my eyes, the Pats will be the front-runners once Revis is released.
Bill Belichick has always loved Revis as a player from afar, and with the recently departed Aqib Talib the Pats have a desperate need for a corner. The Eagles, never shy to make a splash in free agency, are also a squad Revis would have to heavily consider as a team on the come up.
It will be an interesting day two of free agency. There are still some huge names out there, and Revis is certainly one of them. Someone is going to get perhaps the league’s top corner.
