The Philadelphia Eagles went out and acquired the shifty and explosive Darren Sproles from the New Orleans Saints for a measly fifth-round draft pick. This was a no brainer for Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.
Kelly loves quick twitch athletes who can catch the ball out of the backfield, and Sproles fits that description to a tee. Sproles’ 232 catches since 2011 are far and away the most by any running back over the last three seasons. You can just picture both LeSean “Shady” McCoy and Sproles lined up in the same backfield. Defenses won’t know what to do.
Sproles is one of the best decoys in all of football. Even when he’s not involved in a play defenses must always account for him. You just know coach Kelly is going to have fun with his new toy.
The Eagles’ offense is shaping up to be a juggernaut. They have three dangerous weapons at receiver in Riley Cooper, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. They are loaded at running back with McCoy, Bryce Brown, Chris Polk and now Sproles. Then there is the looming draft where they could potentially add even more talent in a draft loaded at the skill positions.
There’s no doubt this team will score. It’s the other side of the ball that could be problematic. For now, though, the Eagles have formed a heck of an offense. Sproles only strengthens it. He is a perfect complement to McCoy who will also bolster the Eagles’ return game in a huge way. He will be their first legitimate kickoff returner in a long time.
This move was an A-plus.
