New York Jets Should Sign Cortland Finnegan To Fill Hole at CB

This is something I have been saying since Cortland Finnegan squared off with Andre Johnson when he was with the Tennessee Titans. The New York Jets should sign Finnegan.

Finnegan signed with the St. Louis Rams two years ago, and during that offseason I was calling for Finnegan to be signed. The Rams cut him this year, and he currently is a free agent. Finnegan has not been mentioned once in NFL free agent rumors, which leads me to believe that he isn’t on many people’s radars. At 30 years old, Finnegan still has gas in the tank and can be a serviceable veteran starter who definitely could provide some leadership for Dee Milliner. If Finnegan comes with a cheap price tag, maybe the Jets can still go out and sign someone like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie or bring back Antonio Cromartie.

Finnegan is an extremely physical, tough corner which would fit perfectly with the smash-mouth style of defense that the Jets play. Finnegan is a player that coach Rex Ryan would love and would be a perfect fit in New York.

Among other corners that are still around are Brandon Browner, who is expected to meet with the New England Patriots sometime this weekend, and veterans Champ Bailey and Asante Samuel.

The Miami Dolphins are hosting Finnegan today (Friday), but it is still very early for the Jets to come into the discussion. If Finnegan signs with the Dolphins, that would mean two top cornerbacks signing with teams within the division. I don’t think the Jets would want that to happen.
