If you are a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, or even of the NFL in general, you have probably noticed that the Steelers aren't a team that makes big splashes in free agency. Well, it's true; the Steelers prefer to build their teams through the draft. Even though the Steelers don't often make impactful free agent signings, that doesn't mean they haven't ever done so. Here are the five biggest signings in the history of the franchise.

Everyone remembers Kimo von Oelhoffen because of the hit he put on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer in a 2006 playoff game which resulted in a torn ACL for the quarterback. However, he was a very good player on the field. In six seasons with the Steelers, von Oehhoffen recorded 20.5 sacks and 124 tackles.

The Steelers would sign James Harrison several times before he was finally able to stick with the team. Harrison had a large impact on the Steelers for many years, recording 64 sacks, 29 forced fumbles and five interceptions in ten seasons.

After spending eight seasons as the Steelers' free safety, it appears Ryan Clark won't be back in 2014. However, his eight seasons with the team were very productive. Known for his ferocious hits, Clark forced three fumbles and picked off 12 passes in his eight seasons with the Steelers.

The Steelers found themselves a great center when they signed Jeff Hartings prior to the 2001 season. Hartings would start 89 games in six seasons with the Black and Gold, making the Pro Bowl in two of those seasons, 2004 and 2005.

The Steelers signed James Farrior prior to the 2002 season after the linebacker spent five years with the New York Jets. Farrior would pick up 742 tackles, 30 sacks, eight interceptions and 12 forced fumbles in 10 seasons with the Steelers.
