Predicting Where the Top 20 Still Available NFL Free Agents Will Land

There have been several names that have flown off the board since the 2014 NFL free agency began this past Tuesday. It’s true that the big-named players are long gone, as they have signed expensive deals with hopeful teams. However, there are still very talented players still available in free agency. Check out my predictions for where the top 20 will land.

20. LeGarrette Blount RB

LeGarrette Blount’s inability to play every down is a big reason why he’s still sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. With that being said, he’s a power back who excels in a power-running offense. At this point, it would be surprising if he didn’t re-sign with the New England Patriots, a team he saw a lot of success with last season.

19. Maurice Jones-Drew RB

Maurice Jones-Drew couldn’t wait for free agency so that he could finally get out of the hole that is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unfortunately, two dismal years has limited his suitors. The reality is Jones-Drew has been the victim of a horrendous football team. Whichever organization decides he’s worth a pickup could see huge dividends immediately. Look for Jones-Drew to sign with the New York Jets, who have shown the most interest in him.

18. Donald Penn OT

The top offensive tackle currently on the market is looking to get paid. Unfortunately, Donald Penn continues to meet with teams who aren’t willing to open their checkbook. The reality is Penn is a durable offensive lineman who simply gets the job done. Of the two teams interested in him, I believe the Washington Redskins could use his help the most.

17. Pat Sims DT

Pat Sims’ career year last season hasn’t turned into a big contract. However, he still has teams interested in his service. The reason why the Tennessee Titans are the best fit is because Sims has proven the ability to play defensive end and defensive tackle effectively. Since the Titans are moving to a 3-4 defense, they will need someone of his caliber.

16. Chris Clemons S

Chris Clemons is the best safety left on the board. Unfortunately, news regarding him has been quiet for nearly a week. He posted decent numbers last season, which means he could be a quality player for whoever takes a chance on him. The Green Bay Packers are in desperate need of a safety. If the price is right, don’t be surprised to see Clemons sign with Green Bay.

15. Emmanuel Sanders WR

Emmanuel Sanders is looking for big-time money. We’re talking Golden Tate money. The bad news for him is that word about possible health issues regarding his feet has begun to circulate, which means teams are thinking twice about signing him. Sanders has visited so many teams that it’s really a toss up to where he will land. At this point, the San Francisco 49ers are the best bet, but his demanded price needs to drop before it happens.

14. Antonio Cromartie CB

Antonio Cromartie shouldn’t expect much more than a one-year deal from his suitors. He’s hinted that he would like to play for the Washington Redskins and the fact that there’s a need for a cornerback certainly bodes well for him. However, the Redskins have yet to show any interest. Regardless, I believe Washington will come around and realize they could use his talents, especially on a cheap deal.

It’s rather shocking to see Knowshon Moreno still available in free agency, especially after he posted a career year. Unfortunately, his price will have to drop before any team gives him the time of day. The reality is running backs can be picked up at a low cost these days. Even though negotiations have stalled, I fully expect Moreno to re-sign with the Broncos on a short-term deal.

12 Julian Edelman WR

Julian Edelman rejected New England’s three-year deal and now he’s paying the price, sort of. Edelman is convinced he will get more than he’s worth. Regardless, the good news for him is that he should still see a decent payday. There are several teams interested in him, but it’s hard to say who will get in a bidding war. Don’t be surprised to see Edelman return to the Patriots, a team that is eager to retain his services.

11. Walter Thurmond CB

It appears Walter Thurmond will sign with the team that is willing to give him a starting job. The Jacksonville Jaguars are a likely candidate, while the San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t be ruled out. The Seattle Seahawks want him back as well but I don’t see that happening. Look for Thurmond to sign with the 49ers to compete for a starting position.

10. James Jones WR

The teams James Jones has been rumored to land with have gone out and signed other wide receivers. At this point, he will have to continue playing the waiting game as his market has died down quite a bit. With that being said, the Carolina Panthers releasing Steve Smith means there’s a definite need for him. Also, the Jets have reported interest as well. I expect New York to get the deal done as they are in need of another wide receiver.

9. Shaun Phillips OLB

Shaun Phillips is a tremendous asset who would be before in Tennessee’s new 3-4 defensive scheme. The interest isn’t exactly real yet, but I would be surprised if the Titans didn’t pull the trigger on a deal.

8. Ben Tate RB

Ben Tate is another running back who is victim of the hard times of his position. The good news for him is that the Cleveland Browns seem very eager to get a contract done as soon as possible. It’s hard to imagine he makes it out of Cleveland without an offer.

7. Julius Peppers DE

Would anyone be surprised if Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys took a chance on Julius Peppers? The answer is no. After releasing DeMarcus Ware, multiple reports suggest the Cowboys are very eager to sign Peppers, especially if he comes at a reasonable price.

6. Michael Vick QB

It’s just a matter of time until Michael Vick signs a deal. The issue is for him to find a team that is willing to let him start right out of the gate. For that reason, Vick will wait it out as long as he needs to until a team gives him what he wants. The Jets are the logical choice, but Rex Ryan isn’t willing to have over the reins without some competition first. Regardless, I would be a surprise if Vick wasn’t in New York next season.

5. Jared Allen DE

Jared Allen is still a sack machine, which is why some team will sign him to a deal. The only way he accepts the offer is if it’s for what he believes he’s worth. The Seahawks are very much interested in Allen, which means that is the most likely place he will land.

4. Jermichael Finley TE

Seattle is also very interested in tight end Jermichael Finley, who is coming off a serious neck injury. The upside to signing Finley is that the Seahawks will get a tremendous offensive talent at a cheap price because of his injury. Even though the team is waiting for him to be 100 percent healthy, it would be shocking if Seattle didn’t sign him.

3. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is by far the best cornerback left in free agency. For that reason, he has every intention of squeezing out every dime he can in a new deal. The most likely spot for him to land is with the Jets, a team that could clean up at the tail end of free agency.

2. Henry Melton DT

Despite Henry Melton’s season-ending injury last year, he’s still a very effective defensive lineman. Several teams have shown heavy interest, with the Cowboys looking to be the favorites to land the talented defensive tackle.

Alex Mack is arguably the best center in the NFL, which is why he continues to wait for the best deal to approach him. The Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts have shown plenty of interest. Both teams need a quality center badly so it simply appears Mack will sign with whoever wants him more. Remember, the Browns used the transition tag on him, which means they can match any offer. For that reason, don’t be surprised if he stays in Cleveland.
