New England Patriots: 5 Remaining Holes That Need to be Filled

5 Remaining Holes That Need to be Filled

Intro
Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots have had an extremely successful offseason thus far. They have upgraded their secondary with the signings of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner while keeping Tom Brady happy by retaining Julian Edelman and adding Brandon LaFell. The Patriots have certainly made their team better, but still have work to do. Here are five remaining holes New England needs to fill this offseason.

5. Defensive Line

With the Vince Wilfork situation in the balance, the Pats need to address their defensive line situation, particularly up the middle. Even if New England retains Wilfork, they simply cannot rely on a a 32-year-old coming off an Achilles injury, a 33-year-old Tommy Kelly coming off a knee injury and a bunch of nobodies to solidify their defensive line. The nose tackle position can be addressed through the draft.

4. Linebacker Depth

Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower and Jamie Collins make up a solid linebacker corps, but the departure of Dane Fletcher and Brandon Spikes leaves an obvious need for depth behind the top three linebackers. Patriots could sign players like Desmond Bishop or Nick Barnett relatively cheap or use a mid-round draft pick on an LB.

3. Pass-Catching Tight End

Tom Brady would love a big target to throw to at the tight end position, especially in the red zone. Rob Gronkowski is unreliable and no one else on the depth chart is an offensive threat. New England needs to look to the draft to acquire another tight end. Jace Amaro, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, Troy Niklas and C.J. Fiedorowicz would be terrific additions to the offense.

2. Safety

Devin McCourty needs some help at the safety position. With the new CB additions, the Pats' defense might be able to get away with Duron Harmon at SS. But, in this passing league, you should be well-stocked with defensive backs. Signing a veteran like Chris Clemons, Charles Woodson or Ryan Clark would help solidify that secondary. In the draft they could look at hard-hitting safety Deone Bucannon.

1. Pass Rusher

This is by far the Patriots' biggest remaining need right now. The Pats need players who can get after the QB on a consistent basis. New England should look to add a veteran pass rusher via free agency, then think about adding another young pass rusher through the draft with a mid-round pick. Jared Allen is still available, but his price tag may be too high. Other fits include: Shaun Phillips, Anthony Spencer and Robert Ayers.
