Baltimore Ravens Need A True Safety
What does Ozzie Newsome have up his sleeve? The Baltimore Ravens look to be going into the NFL Draft with no true free safety on the books. People constantly go on about in “Ozzie We Trust,” but do they really? Ravens Nation has to be just as confused as I am when it comes to the true replacement of Ed Reed. Where is our ball-hawk?
Looking at the roster, there are six safeties and only one of them (Matt Elam) is even notable. Then, there is Jeromy Miles, who kept bouncing on and off the active roster last year and saw little, if no game time in the position. There is Brynden Trawick, who has not impressed and is the reason our receiving corps took a major hit when he ran into Jacoby Jones in Week 1 of the regular season. I will always tie him to this play, because it is the highlight of his existence and it should have cost him a roster spot. Anthony Levine and Omar Brown have chances to compete for the spot alongside Elam, but the winner has a lot of responsibility to take on.
Additionally, the Ravens signed Darian Stewart, who may be a proven tackler in the three years of his career, but only has one interception. Maybe Steve Spagnuolo knows something we don’t, with him having time with Stewart during their stint with the St. Louis Rams. The thing that stands out to me when speaking to these safeties is that all but one (Omar Brown) are downhill hard hitters with poor vision.
Last season, Baltimore played the entire season with no true FS on their roster, and look what happened — they were burnt time and time again, deep and across the middle. Newsome is signing bodies, but not experience or notable talent. Hopefully he is looking to take a safety first in this year’s draft. If not, the Ravens may be hurting on 3rd and long all year long again.
