The New York Giants made their version of a blockbuster free-agent signing this offseason by adding cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to the secondary.
Rodgers-Cromartie signed a five-year, $39 million deal, coming off of a very good year with the Denver Broncos, where he become a leader in the team’s secondary that was without Champ Bailey for basically the entire season.
The signing takes a tremendous amount of pressure off of cornerback Prince Amukamara. Amukamara is a player who has continued to improve each year and has molded himself into a very good No. 2 corner but probably not quite a solid No. 1 option. With Rodgers-Cromartie now lining up on the other side, Amukamara can take on an opposing team’s second-best receiving option for the majority of a game.
Prior to the Cromartie signing, the Giants reeled in cornerback Walter Thurmond, who was on Seattle’s Super Bowl team. Thurmond stepped up in the absence of Brandon Browner, who was suspended. The Seattle secondary did not lose a step in Browner’s absence, due to the high level of play from Thurmond.
Thurmond will likely be New York’s nickel cornerback.
If Rodgers-Cromartie can be an impact performer for the Giants, the secondary should be in for a very good season. The team’s crew of cornerbacks is vastly improved from top to bottom and is also much deeper than a season ago.
Just to give you an idea, cornerback Trumaine McBride was forced into the starting line-up last season due to injuries and played pretty well, but he will now be the fourth corner heading into the 2014 season. The level of talent on the roster now is simply on a different level from 2013.
