The New Orleans Saints have had quite the offseaon. Despite losing Darren Sproles, the team was able to land star safety Jairus Byrd, and it appears as though star tight end Jimmy Graham will stay with the team. That said, they could still stand to improve in a few key areas, and these are five free agents the New Orleans Saints should still sign.
The New Orleans Saints are set as far as starters are concerned at both offensive guard positions, so why should they go out and sign another one? The answer is simple -- depth. Uche Nwaneri probably isn’t much of a constant starter anymore, but he brings veteran leadership and a solid backup plan in case either Ben Grubbs or Jahri Evans goes down with an injury.
After the Saints decided to ship off Darren Sproles to the Philadelphia Eagles for the price of a fifth-round pick, the team effectively created a need for an explosive, shifty running back. Justin Forsett, while not as explosive as Sproles, is a decent playmaker and could make a case to be one of the best receiving backs in the entire league.
Brodrick Bunkley is solid and John Jenkins seems to be a promising young nose tackle, but the Saints could stand to add another player at the position in order to truly establish a good rotation. Terrence Cody has struggled with conditioning throughout his career, but with reduced playing time in a specific role, he could surprise.
Keenan Lewis is fantastic at one cornerback position, but Corey White is a liability at the other. Zack Bowman, while not as good as he once was, is still a solid starter in the league and would put New Orleans’ secondary on another level.
How often do 10 sack players come around in free agency? Not often, and that’s why the Saints need to make a move for Shaun Phillips before it’s too late. Phillips is exactly the type of defensive playmaker that Rob Ryan loves, and he could thrive in New Orleans' blitz-happy defense.
