Nick Foles is obviously the future for Chip Kelly and the Eagles. After Foles replaced Michael Vick in 2013, the young quarterback went on to solidify his position for the next several years. Foles finished the year with 2,891 passing yards, 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. With only four wins in 2012, Foles helped the Eagles to reach a playoff appearance with his dominant performances in 2013. Every Eagles fan is excited about what Kelly can do in his second year with this talented team.
After such a successful year, fans may be wondering why Sanchez would even be added to this team. After all, the Eagles still have 23-year-old Matt Barkley as a backup, and Foles is not as big of an injury risk as Vick was. Sanchez is known more for being a part of a quarterback controversy with the New York Jets than he is for actually playing quarterback, so this is a move that will raise some eyebrows.
It should be clear that Foles is not about to lose his job. This potential move is just to add depth for the Eagles at quarterback, and to help the team try to stay competitive if Foles was to suffer any type of injury. Even though Sanchez has never had a dominant season, he at least would be able to rely on experience if he was called into action. The former quarterback for the Jets has four seasons under his belt, and his time as a starting quarterback is a real asset.
Sanchez may also have a chance to shine because of the playbook of Kelly. Kelly knows how to get the best out of his players, and he could help to make Sanchez successful if the former Jets quarterback needed to lead the team.
While this news is surprising, it should not cause Eagles fans to freak out. I would be much more worried about the fate of DeSean Jackson.
