Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5 First Round NFL Draft Targets

After a disappointing 4-12 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have the 7th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. Tampa Bay has been very active in free agency, as they try to get new head coach Lovie Smith players to fit his system. This is a talented roster, and Smith is a very good coach. A quick turnaround is certainly possible, but they must land an impact player in the first round of the draft.
Here are some prospects they should be targeting.

With Mike Glennon showing some promise and the Bucs bringing in Josh McCown via free agency, I do not believe that the QB position will be a high priority for them on draft day. That said, if their top targets do not fall to the 7th pick and they cannot trade back, Tampa Bay could do much worse than selecting a potential franchise QB like Johnny Manziel. He comes with a ton of risk, but Manziel's play-making ability makes him a potential star.

4. QB Blake Bortles

Blake Bortles has been shooting up draft boards, and is unlikely to be available with at the 7th pick. That being said, crazier things have happened, and the Buccaneers must consider him if he does fall. Bortles has all the physical tools to become a star at the next level, and while they may have more pressing needs, the Bucs would be nuts not to consider him.

3. OT Jake Matthews

While no prospect is safe, Jake Matthews is as close as it gets. He has incredible blood lines, and was an extremely consistent player in college. Matthews is an elite run blocker and does a great job in pass protection as well. His athleticism and upside are limited, but barring injury, Matthews will very likely become a 10-year starter at left tackle.

2. LB Khalil Mack

Smith is a very defensive minded coach, and he would love to get his hands on a player like Khalil Mack. The LB out of the University of Buffalo is an athletic freak that shows impressive versatility. He is incredible against the run, and shows great skills in coverage. Mack could use some work with his pass rushing abilities, but he has the pure athleticism to become a star in that department as well.

Sammy Watkins is the most explosive skill position player in this draft, and would be a perfect addition to an offense that lacks a big-time play-maker. Watkins has elite speed and athleticism that makes him a legitimate deep threat, and he has the hands and route running ability to do some damage underneath as well. Watkins could be gone by the time that the Bucs pick at seven, but if he is available, they should strongly consider drafting him.
