Deone Bucannon Could Be the Best Value S for the Baltimore Ravens

Deone Bucannon

Should the Baltimore Ravens not decide to go after the high-profile safeties like Calvin Pryor or Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, there is still value at the position. After the top two go off to a team that isn’t the Ravens, they will have a decision to make with possible their second round selection. With a glaring hole at FS, the 49th overall pick should be used on Deone Bucannon.

I’d be surprised to see this 6-foot-1, 211 pound center fielder go past the first round. However, there have been stranger things that have happened with the Draft. Players that I had high on my board would drop drastically because of poor scouting; layers like Keenan Allen or Zac Stacy, who went in Round 3 and Round 5, are good examples of this.

After taking a long hard look at the Washington State Cougar, I realized this guy has great field vision, gaining him six interceptions in 2013; he is very aggressive and would sit well next to Matt Elam at FS. Bucannon fights for position, using his body to shield the receiver when the ball is in the air. I like his tackling skills; there are few NFL safeties that pull off 114 tackles in one year. This speaks to his aggressiveness when getting after the ball; his physical toughness is a force to be reckoned with.

We all know these players do not come out of college as perfect products. There is always going to be something each player will have to work on upon reaching this next level. For that, Bucannon he will need to work on going low against bigger ball carriers. He is going from facing college RBs who are averaging 205 pounds, to NFL RBs who range anywhere from 220-250 pounds. He’ll want to change his technique in order to avoid getting bulldozed by the big boys.

Overall, I think Bucannon can be big at this level with the right team and the right coaching. Dean Pees and Steve Spagnuolo should be the right guys for the job. Should all of the stars fall into place, I believe Baltimore will have gotten a steal and Ozzie Newsome will have struck gold once again.
