2014 NFL Draft: 5 Players the Dallas Cowboys Must Avoid

5 Players the Dallas Cowboys Should Avoid in the 2014 NFL Draft

Heading into the 2014 NFL Draft, the last thing that the Dallas Cowboys can be is picky. I say that because they are one injury away, at multiple positions, from finding themselves between a rock and a hard place.

However, there are some players in the Draft from whom the Cowboys should steer clear of, despite their glaring lack of depth. So, let’s take a look at five players that the Cowboys must avoid in the 2014 NFL Draft.

No.5 Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame

Despite being regarded as one of the top defensive tackles in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys should steer clear of Louis Nix III. My biggest concerns regarding Nix are injuries; the Cowboys cannot afford to have another season derailed by injuries. Aside from the injury concerns, Nix isn’t a natural fit in Rod Marinelli’s style of defense.

No.4 Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri

Although the Cowboys have a need for pass rushers, Kony Ealy is player that they should avoid in the 2014 NFL Draft. After watching some of his tapes, I came away unconvinced that he can be an elite player at the next level. His subpar performance at the NFL Combine only reassured me that Ealy doesn’t give it 110 percent on every play.

No.3 Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame

Another player that is regarded one of the top prospects at defensive end is Stephon Tuitt; however, I have my concerns about him fitting the Cowboys base 4-3 defense. In watching Tuitt’s film, I don’t see the “quick-twitch” that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli looks for in his players. In my opinion, Tuitt doesn’t fit the scheme and for that reason the Cowboys should avoid him in the 2014 NFL Draft.

No.2 Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State

Physically, Kelvin Benjamin is one of the most intriguing prospects at 6-5, 240-lbs, but size alone won’t be enough for him to be successful at the next level. Benjamin lacks burst out of his stance, isn’t very quick or physical, doesn't run crisp routes, and overall is very "raw." Those reasons alone should be enough for the Cowboys to avoid him in the 2014 NFL Draft.

No.1 A.J. McCarron, Qb, Alabama

Dallas Cowboys Should Avoid A.J. McCarron

No.1 A.J. McCarron, Qb, Alabama

Dallas Cowboys Should Avoid A.J. McCarron

When you hear the name, “A.J. McCarron” it is commonly associated with the word, “winner,” yet, despite the suggestion, the term “winner” can be misleading, especially when it comes to the quarterback position. McCarron benefited from being on some great teams while at Alabama, but his lack of arm strength and overall lack of accuracy should be enough reason for the Cowboys to pass on him in the 2014 NFL Draft.
